Pandemic Fitness Trends Report: At-Home Workouts Are Here to Stay

https://dailyburn.com/life/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Block-Quotes-1.png

Daily Burn Member Check-In: Six Months Into Pandemic

At-Home Fitness is Here to Stay: 99% of Members Plan to Keep Working Out At Home

Overview:

Six months into the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing protocols, Daily Burn checked in with members both old and new to see how their fitness routines and attitudes towards at-home workouts have shifted.

In a survey of 1,798 active Daily Burn members in the U.S., ages 18 and older, Daily Burn discovered what’s keeping members moving, their motivations for getting a good sweat, and their new/change fitness routines and attitudes after more than six months in a world affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve also included insight and expert advice from Amanda Murdock, Daily Burn’s Senior Director of Fitness, on the trends found throughout the report.

At-Home Workouts Are Here to Stay

  • The results are in and a whopping 99% of Daily Burn members are planning to continue working out at home after the pandemic is over and restrictions lift. Another overwhelming majority (93%) of members say they enjoy their Daily Burn workouts more or somewhat more than attending an in-person gym.
  • Citing convenience (90%), workout variety (74%), affordability (59%), and the trainers (51%) as top reasons for sticking with Daily Burn, an additional 29% of members say they feel safer working out at home during this time. Members also stated that they are simply more comfortable doing at-home workouts; they enjoy the privacy and confidence of being in their own space without other participants.

“Many people feel uncomfortable in a gym setting; it can be intimidating for those new to fitness and even accomplished athletes might not feel confident pushing themselves to try new things or show effort while in public,” says Daily Burn’s Senior Director of Fitness Amanda Murdock. “Working out in the comfort of your own home is the perfect place for newbies and pros alike. No one is watching and you can focus on your workout without worrying about anyone else.”

  • With 89% of users citing “convenience” as their main motivation for joining Daily Burn, the wide variety of workouts is a close second: 84% of members say that a wide range of workout styles and options available in the membership is what led them to sign up.

Movement for Mental Health and Stress Relief is Top of Mind

  • Now more than ever, users are signing up to not only develop and maintain a fitness routine (91%), but nearly half of all members (47%) signed up with the goal of supporting their mental health. Plus, a whopping 96% of members say that working out with Daily Burn has helped them manage and find relief from stress while boosting their mental health.
  • Daily Burn members are starting their days with fitness by working out in the morning: 45% of users have started working out by 9 AM, with 62% of users working out before 12 PM. Plenty of users do work out from 5 PM onwards (23%) because it fits their schedule and/or helps them wind down after a long and potentially stressful day.

“Starting your day with movement can be a great way to set the tone for the rest of your day,” says Amanda, “Exercise has been shown to release endorphins that make you feel happy, which can last for hours after you work out. The bottom line, though, is that the best workout is the one that you do, so do your workout when it works for you!”

Crushing Wellness Goals, Even During a Pandemic

  • With 32% of members working out at least twice per week and 48% working out four or more times per week, it’s no surprise that 96% of users say Daily Burn has helped them reach some or all of their fitness goals. More than half (54%) of users spend an average of 30-45 minutes per workout, and 35% are working out more than they did before joining Daily Burn.
  • While you don’t need any equipment to use Daily Burn, 89% of members amp up their workouts by adding dumbbells, and 69% use a mat for a more comfortable workout experience.
  • Before joining Daily Burn, 40% of users worked out once/week or less; now, 70% of users work out at least twice/week. There’s also been an increase in users who plan to continue working out in general after the pandemic; 99% of users now plan to maintain their fitness routine, up from 93% in April.

Fitness for the Whole Family

  • With the majority (71%) of Daily Burn members’ kids participating in school virtually some or all of the time, fitness is more of a family affair than ever before. A quarter (23%) of members are now working out with at least one other member of their household.
  • Nearly half (45%) of members say their kid(s) being home during the day impacts their routine in some way, and the same amount of members are seeking more content for the entire family.

“Our 365 Fit Family collection was created with these exact needs in mind,” shares Amanda. “Daily Burn has always been about building community and this curated collection of 365 workouts is appropriate for the entire family. Workouts can be done together, or adults can press play and let the kids do their thing while they do theirs. Many members are using the workouts to fulfill virtual PE requirements and their kids are having a blast!”

Trying New Things

  • Whether it’s the desire to simply shake things up or feeling more confident or curious, 68% of members have tried new workouts since April. Users are checking out dance (14%), barre and yoga (13% each), and kickboxing (11%) as they explore new workouts and programs in the vast Daily Burn library.

“Varying your workout routine is important to staying engaged and reducing burnout,” says Amanda. “People want to shake things up, especially while days can feel like they’re blurring together during this time. With over 2,200 workouts available on-demand, variety is at the heart of what we do. Cardio dance is a perfect mix of fun and heart-pumping cardio that can really boost your mood and heart rate. Kickboxing is also perfect for working out any stress in your body and mind, while barre and yoga are lower-impact options that also help calm the mind while toning the body.”

Methodology

Daily Burn conducted the survey in September 2020 via an online survey form to its active members from a sample of 1,798, ages 18 and over from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii, in English. Respondents are paying or trial members of Daily Burn At Home.
